A private hangar collapsed near Boise Airport in Idaho, killing three.

Three people were killed and nine injured when a hangar near Boise Airport in Idaho collapsed Wednesday evening at approximately 5:00 pm MT.

Airport operations were not affected by the collapse, though traffic in the area was busy as emergency crews responded to the scene.

The building was a privately owned hangar under construction located at W Rickenbacker Street and Luke Street, according to a press release issued by Boise Fire Department.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene with search and rescue operations underway. Due to the nature of the collapse, first arriving fire crews worked to stabilize the scene and performed multiple victim rescues during their response, the fire department said. Three people died at the scene and nine were injured, five critically. The injured were taken to local area hospitals.

The names of the three who died will be released by the Ada County Coroner’s Office pending notification of next of kin.

Footage from the scene showed a twisted pile of metal with authorities cordoning off the nearby roads.

“Tonight, there was a catastrophic collapse of a metal structure at a construction site. First responders found a hectic scene and worked to secure and rescue victims,” said Division Chief of Operations Aaron Hummel. “The Boise Airport, City of Boise, and all first responders extend their deepest sympathies to those impacted.”

Boise Airport operations were not impacted by the building collapse.

Crews remain on scene and Wright St. will remain closed through the night, the fire department added. The site is secure, and there is no threat to the public.

The investigation into what caused the collapse is ongoing with OSHA representatives are on scene.
