2023 Most Popular Baby Names by State Released — and the Internet Has Some Thoughts: 'This Must Be Rigged'

In May, the Social Security Administration (SSA) announced the most popular baby names for 2023

The internet is abuzz over the most popular baby names of 2023 by state, which were announced in May by the Social Security Administration (SSA).

According to the SSA, Olivia topped the charts in 18 states, including Alabama, Arizona and Florida. Meanwhile, Charlotte was the most popular name in 21 states, such as Utah, Rhode Island and Ohio. Hawaii uniquely favored Isla as its top name, while Wyoming stood out with Evelyn.

For boys, Liam was the most popular name in 22 states, whereas Noah held the top spot in 8 states, including California, Delaware, and Massachusetts. Oliver led in 13 states, including Oregon, Idaho and Missouri. Mississippi was the only state where John was the top name, and Wyoming also uniquely favored Henry.

Following the announcement, Namberry shared a detailed breakdown of the names by state on TikTok. The video quickly went viral, amassing 1.8 million views and over 4,700 comments.

"This must be rigged 😂🤣 us in California are naming our babies literally THINGS like Sunday, Ocean, Rock, Poppy etc 🤣😫😭," one comment read.

"As a Charlotte who was ever the only Charlotte in any group, this blows my mind," another person wrote. "As someone in ND, I am fully shocked it isn’t Aiden, Brynlee, Oakley or some other variation," someone else replied.

"Hawaii, Mississippi, Wyoming 👏👏👏"someone else commented. "I have an Isla. At least we don’t live in Hawaii 😭😂," another people wrote.

In the announcement, the SSA also revealed the top overall names for 2023, which featured a new name on the list, Mateo. The name was featured on the top 10 list for the first time at number six. The overall top name stayed the same as it has for the past few years  — for boys, Liam and girls, Olivia.

The SSA noted that social media stars had a “major influence” on parents, noting how the name Eiden — inspired by TikTok influencer Wyatt Eiden — also trended in third place as the fastest-rising boy’s name. For girls, the top-rising names for girls included Kaeli, Alitzel, Emryn, Adhara and Azari.

The SSA has compiled a list of the top baby names since 1997, with names dating back to 1880.
