For those pesky stains on clothing that seem inevitable (think pasta sauce spills, drops of wine or deodorant streaks), you might already have your go-to stain remover.

But sometimes you come upon a product deep in the pages of Amazon that just might persuade you to think twice about what your favorite household cleaners are — especially if the product is less than $1.

Listed as the No. 1 best seller in laundry stain removers on Amazon is a product you probably haven’t heard of before: Fels-Naptha’s Laundry Bar and Stain Remover.

While I can say I’ve never seen this on the laundry aisle in a grocery store (despite the fact that it’s been around since 1893), more than 1,200 shoppers have given the product five stars and say it actually works and has many different uses.

How to use Fels-Naptha soap

Even though its official use is to be used as an ingredient in homemade laundry detergents, you can actually use the Fels-Naptha soap bar to directly treat stains on clothing.

To tackle tough stains, Purex (who produces Fels-Naptha today) states that it can be used to “remove greasy, oily stains, perspiration and ring-around-the-collar,” making it an ideal treatment for hard-to-remove odors on athletic clothing and more. And if you ever find yourself with poison ivy, it’s also used as a common treatment to remove poison ivy resin to help prevent further outbreak.

Other documented uses for this old-fashioned soap bar include cleaning grout and bathrooms, lubricating squeaky doors, shining aluminum and even repelling mice, mosquitoes or deer from your lawn (they don’t like the scent).

But if you’re looking for a powerful stain remover, it’s super simple to use. To treat a spot or stain, first, get a corner of the soap bar wet and apply directly to the area. Let the formula sit for a few minutes and then wash your clothes as normal. It’s as easy to use as any other spot treatment, but you’re getting more for less than $1!

For those who’ve put the Fels-Naptha soap bar to the test, most say it works wonders and some have the photos to prove it.

“My daughter is a catcher on a competitive softball team, and this gets her white uniform pants clean,” said one reviewer, whose before-and-after photos are unreal.

And for those with babies, Fels-Naptha is also a game-changer when doing laundry.

“Before Fels-Naptha, we always had that stain-of-shame from blowout diapers. No more!” another reviewer said. “I rinse off the poopy onesie and rub the bar on the stain, [and] it’s like the blowout never happened!”

While most use the soap for laundry, one shopper found another helpful use for the cleaner, which was to remove skunk spray off his dog.

“If your dog got skunked, give it a quick shampoo with Fels,” he said. “It will totally eliminate skunk spray in a single pass. It suds up fast and cuts the odor instantly. In three minutes, your skunk issue is 100 percent solved.”

However, if you are sensitive to fragrances, some Fels-Naptha testers have noted that it has a strong smell to it.

“Be warned if you are sensitive to fragrances!” one shopper said. “This soap has an extremely strong perfume-y cleaning fluid scent. Does not cling to clothing washed in it, but my cabinet smells!”

Will you put this timeless cleaner to the test? I know it’s already in my Amazon cart.
