Well, it can be a tops way for brew lovers to lose a gut, as it contains about half the kilojoules of the real deal. But do they taste the same? We asked three beer drinkers to taste test three types...
The weekend-drinks test''Bavaria Regular Malt $27.99 for 24 bottles, jmjdist.com.au
Tester: WH reader Anne Walton, 29,
Verdict: “I drink Grolsch or Oettinger Pils on the weekends, but we’re about to start trying for a second child, so I drank three bottles of Bavaria while watching the footy with my family. It tasted just like regular beer and gave me exactly the same feeling – that I was indulging, relaxing and involved in the ‘footy culture’. I was just as vocal when my team scored, but I could also think clearly while making dinner.”
Post-work-drink testSchlossgold Non-Alcoholic $37 for 24 bottles, schlossgold.com.au
Tester: WH reader Louise Manners, 27
Verdict: “I drank a couple of Schlossgolds after work on a Monday and they gave me that ‘winding down after a long day’ feeling. I loved that it was less guilt-ridden drinking and I didn’t wake with a foggy head the next day. The packaging made it look authentic, so I didn’t feel like I was drinking non-alcoholic beer. And Schlossgold has nailed that crisp, refreshing beer flavour. The only thing is, I’m used to drinking slightly lighter and sweeter beers, like Monteith’s Summer Ale, and this tasted more like Becks or Steinlager.”
The one-real-beer/one-fake-beer test'''Höpman Premium Pale $7.99 for 4 bottles, hopmanbrewing.com.au
Tester:''' WH reader Jessica Marks, 21
Verdict: “At a friend’s birthday party I alternated between these and my usual Pure Blondes, and ended up having three of each. I really enjoyed Höpman; looks, smells and tastes like beer. You honestly wouldn’t know it was non-alcoholic. It didn’t bloat me like normal beer does, and I felt less guilty, like I didn’t have to wake up the next
day and burn off what I drank. When my friends asked what I was drinking, most said ‘why bother?’ But I think they’re a great idea for designated drivers, and the pregnant or health conscious.”
