It’s always best to flag the issue rather than hit up your employer out-of-the-blue, suggests wealth coach Joan Baker. “Say, ‘I am very keen to discuss my work/role/future/performance and would like to make an appointment – when would suit you?’ It’s clear you’re after the goodies and this gives your manager time to think about what you’re worth or what else they can offer you,” says Baker. In times of deep financial shit, (er, like now) it may be easier for the employer to dish out more leave, training or a promotion in lieu of hard cash. “These things come out of different budget lines,” says Baker.
