People are always asking me what I think about when I’m running. And the truth is – the 100m and long jump are over so quickly, I never have time to think about anything. Although there are exceptions. Last year at the world champs I was 30m into the 100m final when I thought, ‘Aww crap, I’ve got to start running faster’. The best way I know how: getting my foot down straight underneath me, and fast. I see so many people who overstride when they run – which seriously slows them down. For the rest of the race all that went through my head was, ‘Foot down, foot down’. The next time you go for a run – be aware of your foot contact with the ground – you want your foot to strike under your hips (rather than way out in front of you). When you feel your foot hit the ground be really conscious of immediately snapping it back up towards your bum. Also, maintain good posture – keep your core engaged, shoulders back and down and tailbone pointing towards the ground. You’ll immediately feel your running improve and reduce your risk of lower back issues.”
