SPORTING MOMENT OF THE YEAR: 4 x 100m Relay Swimming Gold

In an Olympics that was tainted by almost-golds for a week, the nation cheered when Alicia Coutts, Cate Campbell, Brittany Elmslie and Melanie Schlanger who make up the women's 4x100m freestyle relay team took home Australia's first gold medal.

Beating favourites The Netherlands, the girls combined to break the Olympic record with a time of 3:33.15. Third-leg Brittany Elmslie catapulted the Aussies from third to first and Melanie Schlanger held off the competition to seal the deal.
