Swimming is great for keeping your joints well oiled, but mat work can take you beyond your perceived limits of joint motion and power, according to Corinne Friesen, a yoga instructor and author of Hurry Up - Relax!

Experts say that regular yoga sessions (at least four a week) can increase your oxygen intake by 200 to 300 per cent. That means less fatigue and cramping, because extra oxygen brings more power to every stroke. Do each pose three times - alternating Spider, Butterfly, then Bow - before swimming. The first round is a warm-up, the second finds your limit, and by the third you'll be able to stretch beyond that limit.
