With the promise of long lean muscles, increased flexibility and a ‘ballerina’s body’. Barre classes are taking the fitness world by storm, but what exactly are they?
Contrary to how the name sounds, the classes aren’t solely ballet. While the moves are ballet based (the program was derived by a ballet dancer) Barre actually consists of a mixture of components including pilates, yoga and ballet.

This might sound promising but if you're still not sure exactly what to expect once your arrive to your first class then you're in luck. We’ve chatted to Emma Sibold, owner of Barre Body (available on Classpass) and she’s given us the lowdown on what you need to know before your first Barre class.

General FAQ’S
What do I bring?
"Just your beautiful self and a water bottle. We use our bare feet and supply all yoga mats and equipment," says Emma.
What do I wear?
"Wear whatever you feel comfortable in, as long as it allows you to easily move your body."
Do I need to be fit?
"Absolutely not. Remember that everyone (even your teacher) has been a first-timer at some point. Our classes are catered to all levels of fitness, so you’ll be well looked after, whether it’s your first ever exercise class, or you’re a professional athlete. Your teacher will offer you suitable modifications, variations and challenges to suit your level of fitness, experience and ability."

Do I need to have ballet experience?
"Definitely not. You also don’t need to know any yoga or ballet lingo. And on that note, don’t worry if your legs shake – it’s completely normal and will get easier with every class," explains Emma.

Don’t go too high, fast or big
"If you’re a gym bunny, you might be used to trying to go as hard as possible, all the time. That usually means doing more, and doing it higher, faster and bigger. However, in Barre Body, the logic is completely different. Going lower, smaller and slower is much harder and more effective at toning."

Try not to go beyond your level.
"It’s so important to take the level option that’s most appropriate for you. When you’re taking the advanced option (when your body’s not quite up for it), your technique will be completely compromised, and you won’t get any of the benefits of the exercise," says Emma.

"What’s worse, you may actually injure yourself. It’s so much more important to stay within what feels right for your body, and keep the integrity of your form. And acknowledge that your limits may look different from day to day – and that’s perfectly normal," recommends Emma.

Don’t grip the barre
"We know that sometimes it’s tempting to grip on for dear life. However, send that tension and energy to your abs instead. You’ll remain stable and you’ll tone at the same time. Win!"
