Guest hosting on 2Day FM’s Kyle and Jackie O Show in Sydney on Friday morning, Robbie Williams, 35, in town for the ARIAs and to promote his album Reality Killed the Video Star, took the opportunity to propose to his long-term girlfriend, US actress and model Ayda Field, who sat in on the interview.
When told that Sydney has a reputation for celebrity proposals, Robbie asked Field, “Is there anyone you want to get married to that’s famous? Will you marry me, baby?”
He then went on to say, “Ayda Field, I love you so much, would you mind being my betrothed for the end of time?”
Field replied, “I would love to.”
The impression given was that it was all in good fun, and his London rep confirmed that it was a joke, replying, "He did say it, but in a jocular manner. They are not engaged."
But Williams's mother, Jan, has since gone on British radio's BBC Radio 5 to say that the 35-year-old star intended to marry 30-year-old Field "in the not-too-distant future."
"I'm very excited. I'm really pleased," she said. "They've been together for nearly three years, so it's about time."
Showing his intentions, perhaps, at a press conference earlier in the week, Williams had discussed possible baby names with the attending media, asking what they thought of the names Sunny and Snowy.
