A Swiss court granted Roman Polanski $US4.5 million bail on Wednesday, Nov. 25.
He'll have to remain behind bars while the Swiss government decides whether it wants to appeal the decision. It has 10 days to file the necessary papers.
Under the agreement with the court, the 76-year-old would wear an electronic monitoring device on his ankle and remain under house arrest at his family chalet in Gstaad while the US and Switzerland work out his extradition for sentencing on his decades-old guilty plea for sex with a minor.
The Swiss judges accepted the bail agreement, even though they noted that Polanski has a well-known history of dodging justice. But the judges took into consideration the stress his imprisonment was causing his family, according to the Daily Mail.
Polanski's wife, actress Emmanuelle Seigner, and son and daughter are "very upset psychologically by this separation that is a true heartbreak for them," says Polanski lawyer Herve Temime.
