But there were still plenty of reasons to be happy she made it this far - being mentored by rock queen Susi Quatro, experiencing the Idol House and the opportunity to realise music is definitely the chosen she wants.

Were you surprised to be the first to go?

I was in shock. I seemed to be getting OK comments from the judges. I put everything I had into it. But you know these things happen, I have to think it was a really positive experience and just get up and keep going.

You did get great feedback from the judges. What was your favourite comment?

I think Jay Dee saying I remind him of Jess Mauboy. Last week when I did one of my performances he said I reminded him of when Jess was on the show. He said I was quite focussed and determined. Maybe that worked not very well out in the public but it's lovely to hear.

What are you going to do now?

I'm going to look at my performances and at getting a bit more confident. I can't come out of my shell as much as the others. Definitely, this is what I want to do. So if I have to go and start doing gigs and meeting new people who can guide me where I need to go that would be great.

Has being on the show stuffed up your HSC?

Yeah, I had to drop out last week. I don't regret at all going to Idol. Just because I got voted out doesn't mean I'm not going to get there. Education is always there, and if I want to go back I can, but right now in my heart, I love music.

So you're not going back to school this year?

No, though I don't know what my parents are going to say to me yet.

How was being mentored by Susi Quatro?

It was awesome! She's a real professional and she knows how to perform. She made you feel really good and at least I got to do a rehearsal in front of her. I was going to do "Complicated" by Avril Lavigne if I got through. She said to me, 'I want more attitude from your performance.'

Did you know who she was?

No I didn't. But I did look her up on Google. She was on Happy Days! I'm too young, I don't think any of us knew who she was. I think one girl knew and that's it! But she was really great, really down to earth.

What's the Idol House like?

It's like four stories with an elevator, it's just, like, amazing. When I walked in there, I was like "Ohhhhh My God!" Just craziness, like, wow, I got to stay in a house like that! I was on the bottom level so to have breakfast there was like 30 stairs to walk up every morning. I got good exercise.

Was there a gym in the house?

Yeah, so I got to go in that. About 11 o'clock one night I got home and I just had to go and have a run on the treadmill.

Did you christen the pool?

I didn't get to. I missed out. Oh well.

Who takes the most time to get ready in the morning?

Oh, well, I'm always up, like, 15 minutes before I have to go. I'm terrible, terrible. Hayley and I are always like, 'we've got 15 minutes before we go.' I don't know, everyone's pretty quick, probably Sabrina. (laughs) She's funny, she always looks so nice. I probably always look terrible when I walk out the door. She's always got her hair nice, the make-up. She's gorgeous, I love Sabrina, I hope to be friends with her for a long time.

Is anyone being fake?

No, No. Just watching the video diaries we did the other day, everyone's just honest and funny. Everyone is trying their best to be who they are, being professional but having a good time with each other. I think that's the best thing, to walk away saying "Wow, what an amazing experience we had."

Are you going to keep working at Big W?

I don't know, I'm going to have to get home, have a think about it and talk to my parents. But I think at this time, to have exposure like this, I think, use it while I have it and just see how I go.

You've been going out with Marcus, who is a trainee manager at Big W where you work, for two months. Is it difficult having a relationship with all this Idol stuff going on?

I'm definitely missing him a lot. I think if you really love someone and you've got their support, you can get through anything. Unfortunately he was away this week, so he didn't get to come to the show and he found out I got evicted over Google! It was a shame not to have him there.

Australian Idol airs Sundays, 6.30 PM on Ten.

I loved Ashleigh. She had such a great voice. I can't believe she got voted out in 12th place. Honestly she had everything to win?
