How are you guys feeling? Has it sunk in?
Matt: Has what sunk in? (Laughs)
Jess: Feeling pretty good actually, there's no pressure anymore. It's great we can relax.
Was it your goal to make it to the top ten?Jess: Getting into the top 20 was my goal to be honest, so I'm really happy about making it to the top 10.
Matt: Every round was an achievement for me and I'm just absolutely over the moon about making it to the top 10. It's something I didn't think I was going to be able to do.
Are you disappointed to be the the first to leave the top 10?Matt: No not really, because on the positive side we weren't the first ones to leave and in the top ten you're leaving because of the Australian public voting and there's so many reasons why it could happen – so you cant dwell on it too much. I think we were just happy to be there.
Jess: It's a chapter of a new beginning so I think that's very exciting to look forward to.
Why do you think it was you two that left?Jess: I don't think people liked us very much (laughs).
M: Hated I think! (Laughs)
Jess: I don't really know to be honest; maybe it just didn't read as well as we'd hoped on TV.
Is there anything you wish you’d done differently?Matt: I'm pretty happy with the way I handled myself on the show. I think if we went back and did it all over again it would all be the same. It's just your time's up when your time's up.
Jess: I think you can only be yourself and do your best!
Matt, being a Latin dancer did you think there was ever a chance you could win the competition because ballroom/Latin dancers usually go early?Matt: I was going to go in there and give it a red-hot go. When it comes down to it you can't think of those things while you're in it, obviously there's still ballroom dancers in there and I'm really hoping those guys can do the genre proud.
Jess, did you think you could win as a female hip-hop dancer?I guess there's always a possibility. I don't think unless you've got legs up to your ears and feet that arch over Australia that it reads very well on TV and you're not classified as an amazing dancer - which sucks. Every performance I had to watch back I was never really satisfied with.
Are you always comparing yourself to your competition?Matt: When it comes to body types you do compare to a certain degree with the people who are similar in your genre, but not really. It's not like I'm going to stop eating Kentucky Fried Chicken just because some guy is a bit more thinner than me or something like that, not at all.
Was there anything throughout the competition we didn't see on camera?Jess: There's a lot more behind the scenes stuff that people don't know about. There were a lot of injuries to begin with.
Matt: I wouldn't be crazy if I said that nearly every dancer was dancing through something. I did my ankle.
So what are your plans now?Matt: Thinking in short term we have the road tour, which is going down to Bondi so we're looking forward to that. Future wise I'm just going to keep trying to ride the wave as far as I can ... I'd like to have my own show and be on Burn the Floor.
Jess: Long term I would like to travel around teaching workshops in my own style with the little ones but I also love dancing with artists and doing shows with them. I did some work with Jess Mauboy and other Australian artists.
Do you have any regrets?Jess: I definitely don’t regret doing this show it was an experience that I’ll probably never get again so I’m really glad I got to go down that journey.
Do you think this show will help your career?Matt: It's one of those things that you have to embrace and realise this is just a step, you can't try and forge a career just from SYTYCD you have to embrace that and keep moving forward off of it.
Are there times you want to give it up?Jess: You go through those stages where you're not doing anything and you feel like you don't have a reason to wake up every day, but it's a passion – we don't do it for the money we do it because we just love it. It's whatever makes you happy really.
Who do you want to win?Jess: I love Robbie, I’m either pushing for Robbie or Jessie H.
Matt: I would love, love, love, love, love if Jason Coleman stayed to see Nick win, because I’ve forged a really good bond with him. Another bloke I’d like to win and I think could go all the way is Robbie.
