Australian Idol: Brooke Addamo Says Goodbye

September 23, 2008, 8:57 pmwhomagazine

Melbourne balladeer Brooke Addamo, 17, was a surprise eviction from Australian Idol on Sept. 22 but she is grateful. Grateful for the experience, grateful for the boxing lessons from guest Idol mentor funky, crazy, Cyndi Lauper and grateful she doesn't have to do her final school year - just yet.

Any judge's advice you wish you hadn't taken?

No, I think the judges were right. They did push me in a couple of early episodes, but it was good I got to show off other sides of my performing. But I do wish I would have stuck around to sing a few more ballads.

Best Idol experience?

Definitely meeting Cyndi Lauper, she was amazing and great. And I will take her advice with me forever. She's not very tall, I think she's about my height but she had heels on so she's probably shorter. But she was really lovely. She spoke to us backstage and she was really cool.

She was getting you to push her around during your one-on-one session. Is it fun beating up celebrities?

Yeah, I love bashing up celebrities (laughs). No, I think she was basically trying to get me to have a different edge and just get a bit angry with the song [Bette Davis Eyes]. It really worked, I think. It was fun. (laughs)

Are you going to finish school now?

I think I'm just going to take a week off and then after that start writing again, gigging, getting my name out there. Because I really want to use this opportunity, the little bit of exposure that I've had, to try and get my name out there. If nothing comes of that, I'll definitely go back and repeat next year.

What kind of music are you looking to do?

I've learnt a lot through Idol so I want to write some new stuff. Of course I'm going to have ballads but some funkier stuff, some acoustic stuff. I just want to go and brainstorm.

You look gorgeously healthy now but you weren't always so slim. How did you start to lose weight?

I used to eat to compensate for things. It was a family decision, just changing the foods that you eat, changing your outlook on life. Getting involved in singing really helped my confidence and helped me not be so shy and timid. I don't really go to the gym or anything. I just keep fit. I go on the treadmill and try and not eat too much junk food and stuff like that. I'm not really a health freak but I do like to be healthy 'cause it makes you feel better. Especially if you're a performer, if you eat lots of crap foods and don't do any exercise then it's not going to benefit you.

Have you heard good rumours about yourself?

Yeah. I had a few rumours that I was connected to Hillsong. And that my dad took out a mortgage to vote for me. That made me laugh. But I don't really read the blogs or anything because, I don't know, I don't want to read terrible things about myself. I just stay away from negative things.

Have you met your celebrity crush, radio host Hamish Blake?

No, I haven't, I haven't! I was looking forward to, that maybe if I got further in the competition I would get to meet Hamish. He's really funny. But I haven't. It's a bit sad. Hopefully in the future.

When you get your first single out!
Hopefully! (laughs.)
