Wes Carr Is Our Australian Idol!

November 25, 2008, 9:27 amwhomagazine

You can't stop the music for Bondi boy Wes Carr, 26, whom Dicko famously dubbed a "walking iPod". But Wes was left speechless when it was announced he'd beat out NSW shearer Luke Dickens to become this year's Australian Idol at Sydney's Opera House on Nov. 23; earning him a recording deal with Sony, a car and $200,000 towards developing his craft. WHO caught up with the seasoned performer who originally hails from Adelaide to find out what's next...

How are you?

I'm feeling a little better than I did this morning! I only had half an hour's sleep. I'm feeling like it's an end and a beginning all at once. I'm so relieved and thrilled and excited.

Has it sunk in that you're the new Australian Idol?

No. Not at all. And I lost my mobile a week ago. You know how something is validated when someone text messages you? Well, I haven't got any text messages so I've been living in this bubble!

How did you celebrate?

We went to the Basement, and my girlfriend, Charlie, was there, and two of my best mates from Adelaide, and my sister and my mum, Deidre. Mum gave Dicko a big cuddle! It was this weird alternate reality: mixing my family with the Idol judges!

How do you feel about being a chick magnet?

What? No! That's cool, though I don't know about that title. I'm in a lot more photos than I usually am, I suppose. I walk down to the cafe and they want photos!

What did your girlfriend, Charlotte Gregg, say about the evening?

She was pretty blown away from the whole thing, but more glad I didn't slip over.I nearly stacked it during my Michael Jackson number because it was so slippery. She's been an unbelievable support. It's definitely brought us closer; we're as solid as a rock now.

Apparently you have some other exciting news to share?

Yes, Luke asked me to be the Godfather to his son, Jordan. I'm very, very honoured.

Will you really go on tour with Luke?

Yeah, we hope too. But who knows at the moment. We're both riding this wonderful wave. We're both looking forward to a successful future, hopefully!

What was the hardest part about Idol?

Walking into that audition room, thinking this could go either way.

What's your plan for the rest of the week?

I start recording straight away, beginning with the B-Sides tomorrow. Then I film the music video, and then I go to Adelaide, and then I don't know what happens on the weekend! But my album will be out next year.

Do you plan on recording your own material?

Definitely. Not on the B-Sides, but for the album. I've got about 500 of my own songs to go through!

What was the highlight of Idol?

Last night, definitely. But besides that, Jacko week, when Jermaine Jackson went 'Touchdown' [in a high-pitched whisper].

That was a long thank you speech!

I was going to say it even if I didn't win, but I was going to shorten it if I lost! I'm a little paranoid that I missed the band. I had them on the top of my sheet in capitals but I think I skipped them accidentally because I was in the moment. They were just amazing through the whole thing. John Forrman's a genius!

How is Wes today different from the Wes at Top 100 auditions?
I'm a lot more comfortable in my own skin, more confident and positive. I think I have a better outlook on life.
