She might be one of the biggest stars in the world, but Angelina Jolie says she was “terrified” at the thought of bringing Louie Zampareni's story to the big screen, and had to fight for the job to direct Unbroken.

"I was terrified, terrified!" she told WHO.

“But at the same time I had to convince the studio that I would get the job so I had to go in with this confidence. I had to fight for this job. I fought hard. Because I was not a proven director at all."

Unbroken follows the incredible life of Olympian and war hero Louis “Louie” Zamperini who survived in a raft for 47 days after a near-fatal plane crash in WWII—only to be caught by the Japanese Navy and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp.

Adapted from Laura Hillenbrand’s book, Unbroken brings to the big screen Zamperini’s inspiring true story about the resilient power of the human spirit.

The actress, stunning in a Gucci dress, said it was important to her to bring the movie back to Australia for its world premiere.

“We really feel we couldn't have made this film without everyone in this country and all the people who worked on it,” Jolie said.

“It feels right to bring it here because of our shared history but also what an extraordinary group of people who were out teammates on this and we wanted to bring it to them, to thank them.”

Unbroken is Jolie's second directorial project, after 2011's In the Land of Blood and Honey, and will be released in cinemas on January 15.
