Pistorious maintained he shot his girlfriend in the belief that she was in bed and that there was an intruder in his home. During the trial that gripped the world, evidence was heard that Pistorius fired four shots through a locked toilet door, hitting Steenkamp, 29, who was inside, three times, killing her almost instantly.

As the sentence was handed down, Pistorius stood motionless in the dock, but was seen wiping his eyes as he was led away.

Outside court, Reeva’s mother declared “Justice was served.”

Pistorius’s legal team said he could be freed to house arrest after serving only ten months in prison.
