After telling InStyle she doesn't believe "anyone is naturally monogomous" in its May issue, actress Cameron Diaz is taking a time out to clarify the controversial comments.

In the issue, Diaz takes an unconventional approach to discussing marriage and relationships, telling the magazine: “We all have the same instincts as animals. But we live in a society where it’s been ingrained in us to do these things.”

But don't take those comments to be Diaz's, she says. In the new romantic comedy, “The Other Woman,” Diaz, 41, plays a sexy single woman who discovers she’s dating a married man. And while she may be a real life bachelorette, Diaz insists the unconventional opinions on marriage shared in the May issue of InStyle magazine belong to her character, not her.

"In the movie my character says monogamy doesn't work," Diaz clarifies about.

"But I've never said anything about monogamy - that's something people have applied to me from my character."

As for her own past relationships, Diaz is admittedly thankful for the journey and lessons learned.

“I’m 41 years old – I’ve been through everything, OK? I’m grateful for all of it – whether it was quick and passing or something that lingered too long,” she explains.

Diaz adds, “There is not one thing I’ve been through that hasn’t been a lesson that led me to this moment, and I can’t believe how great life keeps getting.”

Still, Diaz does confess she thinks women expect too much from men in a relationship.

"For some reason, we get into relationships and we expect one man to understand all the parts of us and meet all of those needs," Diaz told the Daily Mail. "I think that's where everything fails."

The 41-year-old star, who is currently single, was asked if she thought having more than one partner was better, to which she replied: "Why not? Why would that be so bad?"

She told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "We can have all of these girlfriends, all of these friendships. I know with my girlfriends I do totally different things with each one of them. I have different conversations. We like things that others don't like."

"There are different commonalities in each one of them and when I want to do those certain things, I can go to that girlfriend and we do those things together."
