Michelle Williams & Jason Segel have called it quits on their , quietly splitting up earlier this month, US Weekly reports. The 32-year-old My Week with Marilyn actress and the 33-year-old Forgetting Sarah Marshall star began began dating at the beginning of 2012.
Though the two seemed happy together as recently as January, when they were photographed on vacation in Cancun with Williams' best friend, Busy Philipps, the couple struggled to make the romance work long distance. Segel is based in Los Angeles, where he films hit sitcom How I Met Your Mother, while Williams lives with her seven-year-old daughter Matilda in New York City.
Tight-lipped about their romance, Williams and Segel maintained a low profile as a private Hollywood couple. Segel spoke vaguely about Williams last April, telling Extra, "I think we would just very much like to be happy. That's all I'm going to say about it."
Williams echoed Segel earlier this month when she told In Style that she cherished public support of her relationship." If people are happy about it that makes me feel good ... Any kind sentiment that the world can feed back, well, I won't turn it down," she explained.
But the pair mutually decided to quietly end their relationship in early February, a surprise to those close to the stars, who predicted the couple would eventually get married.
"You should hear Matilda talk - she wants to be a flower girl, and she tells her mom she wants a little sister," a source told National Enquirer previously."She knows that won't happen if Momma doesn't marry Jason - so she's pushing for it. Jason lives to make Michelle laugh and that's pretty hard for a gal to resist. Plus, he's shown he'd make a great daddy. Bet on a marriage by the end of the year."
Matilda's father is the late actor Heath Ledger, who passed away in 2008 from an accidental prescription drug overdose. In September, Segel was photographed with Williams, her daughter Matilda, and Ledger's mother, Sally Bell, at the Bronx Zoo in NYC.
