Despite only touching down from Los Angeles this afternoon, Nicole Kidman was at her relaxed and radiant best as she joined Geoffrey Rush, Cate Blanchett and Russell Crowe to celebrate the second Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards tonight at Sydney’s The Star.
Smiling and chatting openly with reporters on the red carpet, the jet-setter revealed she was officially back to support husband Keith Urban, who tonight kicked off his The Story So Far tour at All Phones Arena. “I happened to be here and I was like, ‘Ok, I can go to this as well, as long as I get to the show tonight,’” she said of lending her star-clout to our Oscars equivalent. “I have to make it to Keith’s first show in Sydney,” added Kidman, sleek in summery buttercup Erdem. “I’m going to be rushing, [but] I want to be able to see the opening of the show, it’s important to me.”
Hours earlier, the couple had been reunited at Sydney airport, where Urban greeted his wife and their daughters Sunday, 4, and Faith, 2, with kisses as they exited the LA flight they’d shared with AACTAs host Russell Crowe. “Russell carried Faith Margaret out for me because I was so tired,” laughed Kidman. “And I’ve got all the bags and the blankies and the stuffed toys, so Russell carried Faith ... passed her off to daddy!”
Not to be outdone on the red carpet, Hansel and Gretel’s Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton turned heads alongside Australia’s own Cate Blanchett, Megan Gale and Joel Edgerton, who escorted rumoured new fiancée Alexis Blake, stunning in white. With The Sapphires later scooping 11 of its 12 nominations, including Best Film, it was only fitting its leading ladies Deborah Mailman, Shari Sebbens and Jessica Mauboy had made an entrance, arriving on the red carpet in a sexy Bentley convertible.
Laughing off talk of friendly rivalry with fellow nominee Mailman, “We’re just here to celebrate each other and the rest of the industry,” Mauboy, sleek in red Stephen Kahlil, told WHO ahead of her win for best supporting actress and performance before peers including AACTAs president Geoffrey Rush. “Coming home and having the success here, it’s definitely something you can’t beat.”
