Why? It’s essential for the normal production of thyroid hormones. Years ago, before iodine was added to milk, salt, flour, water and animal feed, iodine deficiency was rampant. Today it’s rare, though vegans can be at risk if they cut out all eggs and dairy, as can the elderly if they avoid iodised salt to lower blood pressure. FYI: Salt in processed foods (the source of most sodium in our diets) is generally not iodine fortified. Worried? You can take a multi that contains the mineral if necessary.
