You’d think that pimples would be a thing of the past by the time you have a mortgage and kids. But skincare experts say that the face of acne is changing—it’s not just teenagers who struggle with spots. Research reveals that 26% of 40-something women and 5% of 50+ women still battle breakouts.
A lot of it is due to hormonal changes. Whenever your body experiences a surge in so-called male hormones, such as testosterone, oil production increases—and this creates a clogged pore where bacteria can grow, causing inflammation and pimples. This may occur more frequently during peri-menopause, but it also happens just before your period. According to one study, women over the age of 33 are more likely to experience premenstrual pimples than younger women are.
