Get Fit With Fido

Make your pet your training partner. We asked one pooch-loving fitness expert his top three tips for exercising with your dog.

"Both you and your dog need exercise every day—not just for your physical health but for your mental health too. The mental-health benefits of exercise are underrated; one of side effects of exercising daily is that you get a much better behaved dog at home." –Paul Watson, Dog Whisperer

Paul Watson, Strength and Conditioning Coach, Director of Sydney's Jock Athletic (jockathletic.com) and 'Dog Whisperer', runs Dog Along Fitness sessions for people and their four-legged friends. These are his top three exercises.

1. Hit the Beach Go to an off-leash beach and walk/run along the shoreline. Your dog will have the best time and burn off more energy than you. The benefit is that you will get fitter each day. Your local council will have a list and/or map of dog-friendly beaches.

2. Go for Coffee Park your car a long way from your favourite coffee shop and walk to your skim-latte. It's a great social outing for both of you and avoids parking troubles in busy areas! Just be sure to bring a bowl for pup's water.

3. Monkey Magic Work out at the monkey bars in the park. Between sets of chins, push-ups and lunges do sprints with your dog!
