While many of us are searching for the fountain of youth, nine Sardinian siblings, who have been recognized as the world’s oldest in terms of combined age, attribute their longevity to the humble minestrone soup.
The oldest member of the Melis family, Consolata, turned 105 this week, while the youngest of their siblings, Mafalda, is 78.
While the editor-in-chief of Guinness World Records, Craig Glenday, says it’s incredibly rare to have such a large number of living siblings with an average age of more than 90 years, it’s not surprising given than Sardinia holds many of the longest living people in the world.
Dubbed ‘The Sardinian Blue Zone’ by National Geographic explorer and author Dan Buettner in his book, The Blue Zones, Sardinia boasts 371 people who have lived over 100, and 22 for every 100, 000. Scientists, like Buettner, credit genetic heritage, frugal Mediterranean diet and a healthy lifestyle.

But genetic heritage can only get you so far. Buettner says: “Scientific studies suggest that only about 25 percent of how long we live is dictated by genes… The other 75 percent is determined by our lifestyles and the everyday choices we make.”
