Emergency care

On the rare occasion that your baby needs help with breathing, or is born with something wrong, you will not immediately get time with him or the opportunity to hold him. When there are concerns for a baby’s health at birth, he is held up for the parents to see him quickly before he is transferred to a special baby bed with oxygen where he can be cared for. If your baby doesn’t recover quickly in the delivery room, he will be transferred to a special care nursery or neonatal intensive care unit. The staff will typically take a photo of him for you and as soon as you are able, you will be taken to see him. Of course, being separated from bub can be distressing for new parents, but try to remain positive. If you can’t hold him, continue to give your baby love by touching and talking to him, as this can be helpful.
