In this month's magazine 2 mums discuss organic v's non-organic food.

Is an organic diet the best option for your family? Does the cost of organic food influence your choice?

We try to buy organic food not just for our baby but for our entire family wherever possible, although price does play some part in our decisions.

We enjoy better sourced and grown foods more for the fantastic flavours than anything else, however the lack of chemicals is certainly a huge contributing factor.

As a family who enjoys eating a lot it's important to us that what we eat tastes delicious. About 10 years ago my husband and I started buying only free range, grain fed eggs. It cost us about $6 per dozen back then, when the average cost for a dozen eggs was around $3-$4, but we knew that supply/demand would eventually mean that prices would even out and sure enough, there is very little price difference between cage eggs and free range eggs (within same brands). The flavour difference though is incomparable.

It is important for us to instill healthy eating habits in our children and ensure their diet is nutritious and well rounded, and feeding them organically sourced foods assists us because we feel they are more nutritious and as the flavours are better it makes our food more delicious. This has helped us encourage our children to eat lots of different foods.

I believe the price of organic food as opposed to the price of standard farmed foods is the largest factor in parents' choosing products for their children. If the prices were the same or even close I'm sure most parents would choose the organic produce.

Unfortunately Australia does not have laws surrounding the wording of "organic" within the industry, and as I buy products and see the word organic and then look at where it is made what it is made of, I realise that unless it carries "certified" with the words organic, it means nothing.

I notcied a woman buying organic baby food and wanted to tell her that there was little difference in buying that then there was in buying just normal baby food and providing your child with healthy options at home in the variety of foods not just whether they are organic.

I found it easier to buy freezer tubs and on any night of the week when I was cooking dinner, I would use the hand blender and blend up a batch of what ever I was cooking throw them in the freezer and there was a huge cache for any time in the future weeks if I was feeling tired or too busy to cook a real dinner for kids but needed something for baby.

I do love bought baby foods, they are easy and make life easier but it is a bit hard to use them as baby gets older and requires more than what the bottle or tin holds and farex helps a lot with the adding of substance so can rice.

Bananas and cooked tin apples mashed is wonderful, but the after effects are interesting and maybe not too nice on the nose..lol add alittle custard and your child will be licking their lips.

I was lucky my children all ate anything, or maybe I was just a nasty mother who made them eat anything or they starved...lol So they now tell me.  One says she will never feed her child brains but in fairness to me, that was my mother who did that not me and they loved it so much she kept feeding it to them..lol
