hi every1,im kira first time mum with 6month old baby boy Brock.am really excited to talk to you all about stuff. one question id like to ask is if any1 can give me some advice on the best ways to wean bubs off the dummy, lately hes been wakeing up numerous amounts of times during the night wanting his dummy and i am now exusted from getting up every hr. i try during the day to put him to sleep without it but he gets so histerical n cries for ages that i eventually give in and give it to him. plus let me no if any1 has had problems with formula,i upgraded to the next stage(progress) cause he is now 6months and he got terribly constipated because of all the extra iron and have now put him on a cheap brand and back to the newborn stage.it has helped the constipation but please let me know if any1 has had any similar problems.xx

    HI there Kira.

Welcome, to help with some of your concerns, I have no idea how to wean the dummy - we gave ours to Santa when my little guy was nearly 3 and that was traumatic enough. I think if you are going to do it, you just have to suffer for a couple of days while he gets used to it.

Yes I had serious problems with the formula when I stepped up, we started solids at the same time and it caused all sorts of problems, On advice from the MCHN we stopped solids and used coloxyl in the formula, then two weeks later introduced solids again.

Hey Kira, welcome. Oh god, that dummy stage. I remember it well. There's no way to wean easily - apparently up to four days of screams and they'll forget it existed at 6 months though. I couldn't do it with C1 so just suffered until she worked out how to find and reinsert her own. We put several in the cot though - that was our only strategy. And yep, same prob with Step 2 formula. With C1, we were advised by a paed that it's not needed and to stay on Step 1 until we weaned to cow's milk at one year. We had the same issue with C2 so we're doing the same. HTH!

hey me again, thanks for the advice, bubs managed 2sleeps without the dummy n i guess i just have to bite the bullet and put up with the screamin for a couple days, its hard as a first time mum to decide wat formula is best for bubs, i went for s26 gold because of all the advertisment thinking it was the best for baby but wen i had all the problems the midwives told me there was no need to use the 'gold'brand and no need to upgrade to next stage cause theres way to much iron and they already get enough from the food.i found it annoying that no1 had informed me about it cause not alot of midwives/docs talk bout bottle feeding.i had a horrible time in hospital wen bubs arrived cause i found it extremly hard to breastfeed due to having a c-section and having a large baby that wen i got help from midwives they all said different things even forcing bub on the breast which tramatised me and him n everytim i put himnear hed scream in fear leading him to bad weight loss n me deciding to bottle feed.any1 had similar experience?

    Welcome Kira!

I'm sorry I have no experience with dummies or formula but I'm sure you'll get plenty of advice from others!  All the best and welcome :-)

That is the worst thing about midwives in hospital - all the conflicting advice. Argh, and the boob-baby mashing!!! It worked occasionally for me, but it wasn't something I was going to keep up long term!!!

The hospital are bound by the WHO rules about promoting breastfeeding, so they can't really give you much advice about bottle feeding, unless you specifically ask for it. I think formula feeding mums need a helpline like the ABA offers, for all the dumb questions which no one tells you that you need to ask!!

    Hi Kira

Welcome to the PP forum. We just got rid of our sons dummy now (he is 2 and a half), he is a bit older so he put them all in the bin and in exchange we went to the shop and bought him a scooter as a 'big boy' present which he loves. He was a bit unsettled for a few nights but then he was fine and he never regetted his trade! Our son is a lot older though so understood what was happening. At six months we just got up several times a night and put the dummy back in for me I felt it was easier to just shove the dummy in and go back to bed.

I don't know anything about varieties of forumla. Practical Parenting magazine does offer bottle feeding advice generally (whereas a lot of others don't) but it is illegal to advertise infant formula so it is hard to get recommendations of a certain brand. I think asking other mums is the best bet and then just trying and if you're not happy switch.

Hey Kira - a good friend of mine is a midwife and when I put my son onto formula she recommended S26 Gold and that is what she used for her children too, she also advised me to use step 2, so I honestly think most of it is based on the midwives personal preference.

There is a thread about breastfeeding, my story is there.
