Bottle of vodka saves Cleo the pup

Cleo would have been feeling as weary as this pooch after a bottle of vodka

Poisoned pooch Cleo, a 10-week-old American Staffordshire pup, has been saved by a bottle of vodka.

After licking radiator fluid off spare car parts in a garage last week, Cleo began to quickly deteriorate with deadly ethylene glycol poisoning, showing signs of kidney failure just 30 minutes after ingesting the dangerous chemical.

After realising Cleo had become unsteady on her feet, the pooch’s owner, 27-year-old Stacy Zammit from Victoria, rushed her to the vet.

Just hours away from possible renal failure, Animal Accident and Emergency Point Cook vet Dr Yenny Indrawirawan proceeded to hook Cleo up to a bottle of vodka.

"Cleo had really bloodshot eyes and she was pretty unsteady. She couldn't move around much because she was so wasted,” owner Zammit told media.

The young canine ingested almost a bottle and a half of vodka in less than 72 hours.

Dr Indrawirawan told media that despite the "hair of the dog" treatment being rare and expensive at more than $2100, the alcohol prevented a chemical reaction in the body, without which “Cleo was likely to develop renal failure."

Cleo has made a full recovery and overcome her vodka-induced hangover. It’s safe to say she will refrain from licking spare car parts in the future.
