Natalie Bassingthwaighte has opened up about the sudden death of her manager and friend Mark Byrne from a heart attack in September this year.

The pair had spent much of 2014 working on a new album, Nat's first foray back into music since 2011, however she admits she has been too sad to make music since.

“I was due to go into the studio the day he passed,” the X Factor judge told News Corp.

“Since he passed I just haven’t been able to sing. I just couldn’t go there. He was my life.”

The mother-of-two admits Byrne helped her find her 'mojo' and get back into the studio after having kids, but says now she is taking a step back to reasses her options.

“It’s not like I won’t do music again. When you’re a singer it’s always there, but it has to be the right thing at the right time. I don’t want to do a track that’s not me.”

The 39-year-old also credited pal and fellow X Factor judge Dannii Minogue helped her through some of her toughest days.

“Dannii would mentor me, the way Mark would have had he been there. She’d say ‘Come on you can do this’ and I needed that. I knew I’d probably fall into a hole if I didn’t keep working and I knew that wouldn’t be great for my husband or my kids."

Nat owes much of her career success to Byrne who signed her up in 1998 when she was part of The Rogue Traders.

“You were my inspiration, my manager, my mentor and my friend. I feel lost, empty and heartbroken. Time to rest now, “ she tweeted shortly after his passing.
