Mal Meninga: 'I'm a dad..again!'

As a former Australian Test captain and Queensland’s most successful State of Origin coach ever, rugby league royal Malcolm ‘Mal’ Meninga, 53, has had his fair share of celebrations during his illustrious career.

However, this week he exclusively tells New Idea that helping his son Elijah blow out the candles on his first birthday cake while cradling his newborn Zac in his arms was one of the best moments of this life.

‘It was a pivotal moment,’ Mal says. ‘A few years ago, if you told me that we’d be celebrating a first birthday and a newborn baby at this stage of my life, I would have thought you were kidding.'

They may be busy juggling a newborn with a toddler, but Mal and his beautiful wife Amanda are relaxed when New Idea visits them at their Brisbane home to meet the new addition.

Mal had a reverse vasectomy in 2011 in a bid to conceive Elijah.

‘I thought at my age, if we were going to have another one we’d better do it shortly, but it happened so quickly,’ he says.
