Everyone loves a wedding – but as Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s sister, it’s fair to say Christine Forster’s nuptials to her partner Virginia Edwards will get more attention than most.
The pair exclusively tell New Idea – out today – that they are looking forward to their big day, after Christine – a Liberal councillor at the City of Sydney – popped the question to Virginia in the NSW outback.
"We got engaged when we were away with friends on a trip to Broken Hill," Christine, 49, tells during a warm and revealing chat at the couple’s inner Sydney home.
With wedding plans afoot, the couple have all but settled on a venue and guest list.
"And instead of bridesmaids, we’re going to have drag queens," laughs Virginia, 56. Christine adds: "It will be close friends and family. Tony and Margie will definitely be there."
There’s just one sticking point – same-sex marriage is not yet legal in Australia.
Awkwardly, Christine’s brother – the Prime Minister – is part of the roadblock.
The couple don’t hold much hope Tony will change his mind, but believe marriage equality is inevitable.
