We Found Love singer Rihanna, 24, appeared on Oprah's Next Chapter, where she gave an emotional interview about her ex-boyfriend.
Rihanna told Winfrey of Brown, who violently assaulted her in 2009:
"It was a weird, confusing space to be in. Because as angry as I was, as angry and hurt and betrayed, I just felt like he made that mistake because he needed help and who’s going to help him? Nobody’s going to say he needs help."
She added: "Everybody’s going to say he’s a monster without looking at the source, and I was more concerned about him."
Rihanna also said through tears: "I lost my best friend. Everything I knew switched... switched in a night and I couldn’t control that."The singer has stirred up controversy recently for staying in contact with Brown after the abuse and collaborating with him for the remix of her song 'Birthday Cake'. She said earlier this year:
"I reached out to him about doing 'Birthday Cake' because [he was] the only person that really made sense to do the record - just as a musician.
"Despite everything else, that was gonna be the person."
