The babies are the first children born to the Princess and her husband Prince Albert II and the first Grimaldi twins in the royal household.

Albert, 56, also has two children, Jazmin Grace Grimaldi, 22, and Alexandre Coste, 11, from previous relationships.

If the babies were the same sex, the first one out would have succeeded the throne, however despite Princess Gabriella being born two mintues earlier, Prince Jacques will inherit the title of Marquis in accordance with the Mediterranean principality's male inheritance laws.

"In accordance with the historic custom established by the treaty of Péronne (1641), he shall receive the title of Marquis of Baux (in Provence)."

The newborn princess will receive the title of Countess of Carladès (in Auvergne) and is the second in the line of succession.

Shortly after the births, 42 cannon shots - twice the usual amount to mark the birth of twins - were fired in Monaco, confirming that the babies had been born.

The former Olympic swimmer first announced she was pregnant back in May and later confirmed their double bundle of joy in October when she revealed her due date was Christmas.

The couple have been married since 2011 after meeting during a swimming competition in 2000.
