Healthy eating tips for men

According to the Better Health Channel, Aussie men are nowhere near as healthy as women. They are more likely to die at an earlier age and get sick from serious health problems, such as cancer, diabetes or heart disease.

A recent health survey reported that men are more likely to be overweight, with 68 per cent of men now classified overweight or obese compared with 55 per cent for women.

Being overweight increases the likelihood of lifestyle problems such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnoea, many of which are preventable via healthy eating and exercise.

Rather than trying to introduce radical changes to your man’s meals, it’s easier to work in with what he likes and sneak in changes in small ways – I call it nutrition by stealth!

Buy lean meat, scale down the portions in dishes and bulk up the rest of the plate with sweet potato, pumpkin, rice, chickpeas or three-bean mix. You can fill out his plate with more vegetables and cut back on starch. A large baked or boiled potato or a cup of pasta or rice is ample for most men.

Go for the vegetables like tomatoes (also good for prostate health), broccoli, peas, corn cobs, mushrooms and onions.

Healthy tip
For a hearty man's brekkie, try rolled oats with banana and pear, followed by eggs on toast!
