Banish winter beauty blues

The cold can wreak havoc with your skin. ‘During winter our skin tends to dry out more due to environmental stressors such as cold weather conditions, and we tend to have hotter showers and baths,’ beauty therapist Amy Erbacher says.

If it feels dry, address the problem now as well-hydrated skin not only feels more comfortable, it also reflects the light better, giving you a glow. Here’s how to do it.

Switch moisturiser
‘Consider switching your moisturiser in winter from your usual summer product if your skin is feeling excessively dry or looking sallow,’ says Dr Katherine Armour, consultant dermatologist to L’Oréal Paris. ‘You may need a more nourishing moisturiser under your make-up during the day (unless you tend to have very oily skin) and a very hydrating product at night-time.’

Exfoliate your face
‘Skin tends to dry out and flake in the winter,’ ModelCo make-up director Leiane Taylor says. ‘As the skin on the face dries, the dead skin cells multiply on the surface. So it’s super important to exfoliate once or twice a week with a scrub to cleanse pores, remove excess oils and eliminate dead skin cells.’

Love your lips
‘Lips don’t really have oil glands, so they need extra TLC, especially in the cold, wind and at night with heating,’ says Kirsten Carriol, creator of Lanolips. ‘Lather on a nice thick lip balm before you go to bed every night and when out in the cold to keep them moist and luscious.’

Remember sunscreen
‘Even in winter the sun’s UV rays are still very strong and harmful and can promote premature ageing,’ Amy says.
‘I recommend a good lightweight nano-free zinc with SPF 30+.’
