Don’t let the chilly weather ruin your hair! We asked the experts how to get through winter with healthy locks.

How should Aussie girls take care of their hair in winter?
‘Styling can be a challenge in different climates – cold climates can cause
hair to lose moisture,’ says leading stylist and Sunsilk co-creator Teddy Charles, who looks after the locks of Sarah Jessica Parker. ‘To maintain a style and keep hair healthier, use a leave-in conditioner, which helps retain moisture.’

What should I do with my hair when it rains?
‘Hair will absorb water and the inevitable frizz will happen,’ celebrity stylist Barney Martin says. ‘Try applying a leave-in treatment before leaving the house or slick back into a ponytail or top knot.’

Can I skip trims in the winter months?
‘No, a lot of people think this!’ Barney says. ‘It’s best to regularly trim your hair to keep it healthy – every six to eight weeks is best for long hair, and four to six for short. This is especially important in winter, when the elements and central heating are most harmful to the hair.’

I wear a hat in the cold – does that ruin my locks?
‘Not at all. A hat protects hair from wind and rain,’ Barney says. ‘Hair accessories and hats can also be a way to give yourself a new look without doing anything too drastic.’

Help! I don’t have much hair and in the cold it’s always flat!
‘Fine hair can become static flyaway hair in winter,’ hairstylist George Giavis says. His advice? ‘Apply conditioner to the ends of the hair, not the root, so you can still get the volume.’
