Realistic expectations lead to happier marriages, according to a study in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

Researchers interviewed 82 pairs of newlyweds and found that couples with high hopes, but poor relationship skills were the most disappointed if the marriage didn't live up to expectations.

"Expect it to be work and expect to have disagreements - and realise it's okay," says Dr James McNulty. He suggests seeing a marriage counsellor before tying the knot.
