The myth: long, slow cardio is a waste of time

The truth: sure, interval sprints are great for burning fat and building fitness. But long, easy runs should still have a place in your training schedule. A moderate pace expands the heart’s capacity, which will let you ramp up other workouts, says certified strength and conditioning specialist Bill Hartman. The further off your target race is, the less intense your cardio should be. Build (or maintain) your base, then add interval work – once every 10 sessions is plenty.
