The myth: it pays to buy a tuxedo

The truth: a black suit – or even midnight blue – works just as well. “Most tuxedos look too strict and overtly tailored – too much like armour,” says Steven Faerm, director of the fashion design program at Parsons The New School for Design in New York. A suit offers long-term versatility and style. When shopping, examine pricey labels so you can recognise quality – fabric, buttonholes, stitching – and then look for the same in less expensive labels.
