Before leaving dry land you can take precautionary steps to avoid "feeding the fish". Cohen suggests you limit food and alcohol for three hours before departure. "Avoid heavy meals, dairy products and foods high in protein, kilojoules and salt."
The reason is the unfamiliar motion of the boat can unsettle your body, interfering with the way your digestive system absorbs food and causing the onset of nausea. "Food or alcohol in your stomach is just going to make you feel worse," says Cohen. Don't be a drunken sailor.
