How did you feel about winning the competition?

I think my first reaction was absolute shock. I didn’t think for one minute that I would actually end up on the cover, and it actually took a few days for it to sink in. It was a complete spin out when I walked into a shop that stocked Men’s Health and there I was grinning away on the cover!

How did friends, family and former students react to you winning the MH Man Award?

That was probably the best part of the whole experience, because all of my friends, family, colleagues and students were really rapt for me and got in touch to say well done. My mum and dad were proud as punch and my 93-year-old granny has a poster of me up in her room at her nursing home which she loves to point out to anyone she can!

Has it led to any other changes or opportunities in your life?

There have been a few opportunities that have come up since the competition. I haven’t always been able to follow up on them because of my job, but I have done a couple of modelling jobs that I could fit in around work.

What do you think makes a man well-rounded?

I guess a man who is able to manage his life so that he can find the time for all the important things, such as family, friends, exercise, career and hobbies. I don’t think it’s a particularly easy thing to do. Well-rounded men are really good at prioritising their time and are prepared to work hard to get the most out of life.

What are your secrets to staying healthy?

I think the most important thing for me is my discipline. It is not always easy to front up to the gym or go for a run but thankfully I am quite disciplined and I just get out there and do it.

What were some of the highlights of the MH MAN experience for you?

Going to Sydney twice and meeting and hanging out with the other guys in the competition was great fun. They were really great blokes and I still keep in touch with a few of them. Meeting all the people from Men’s Health was great as well as they were fantastic and couldn’t do enough for us.

What would you say to someone who was thinking of entering the 2010 MH MAN competition this year?

Go for it! I never dreamed that I would ever appear on the cover of Men’s Health. But I did. And it never would have happened if I hadn’t tried my luck and sent in my entry.
