Rating:

"Crack so me nuts. Raw, unshelled peanuts are really high in protein and you can get your good fats from them. Plus, you tend not to eat as much because you've got to shell them." - Bradley Smith

"I've been working as an armed boarding officer for customs down in the Southern Ocean for two-and-a-half years. It's exciting, interesting work. We're on standby and then we'll get information that we're going to board a suspected illegal vessel. We'll apprehend them if necessary, depending on whether they've breached any laws.

"But life at sea can be arduously long. We can be down there for six weeks or longer, so you have to be able to amuse yourself and keep active. Having a fitness routine helps the days tick by, although in big swells it's pretty hard to train. One day might be beautifully calm and you can do a lot of training, the next three might be rough, so you've got to adapt to the conditions, look at the weather each day and train accordingly.

"We do a lot of boxing and we've got a gym, but you've got to keep the weights pretty low when the seas get heavy. We work on core stability and do a lot of bodyweight exercises.

"On dry land you crave anything different - things you can't normally do. I like to swim, run and do activities like wakeboarding and adventure races. It's like you've been released from prison!

"Exercise has helped me with discipline. I get fitness tested in my job, which I've managed to keep on top of and remain injury-free. A lot of people get out of shape, but you can negate that before it starts by maintaining a good level of health and fitness.

"On the ship you can't be too strict with your diet because we've got cooks, but they're pretty good and usually serve up a variety of healthy food. I try to eat a lot of protein, like chicken and fish, and eat continually throughout the day. My skin care tip would be to shave in the shower so it's not so harsh on your skin. My girlfriend's always telling me to use moisturiser and sunscreen as well.

"When you're training, you need to focus on hitting it as hard as you can. A lot of people rest too long between sets. I try to work another muscle group in my rests. I do supersets and whole-body movements, like squat to press. I also do interval training on the rower, in which I do 500 metres as fast as I can and then try to beat that time.

"A lot of guys get into a routine where you train at sea and relax at home. When I dock I have a couple of days off and then get straight into an at-home routine. It's like my life's divided in two, but even though they're very different, I find I can maintain a balance."
