Watch 500 Years Of The Female Portrait In Time Lapse

A video morphing 500 years of female portraits into a three-minute video has gone viral.

Made by art auctioneer website Art Frido, the film contains over 100 iconic portraits, including the Mona Lisa and that of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.

The results are quite fascinating, and indicate how much the female face has changed over time - with the once cherubic features favoured by artists becoming more angular with time.

"Even if you're no art expert, you will still appreciate the beauty of these masterpieces and get blown away by the evolution of art over the years," says Art Frido on its website.

Whether intentional or not, jezebel.com points out that women of colour are grossly misrepresented in the video.

"Watching one portrait (of a pretty white lady) transform into the next portrait (of a pretty white lady) is both freaky and fascinating," said the site.

However, another fan argues that simply calling the portraits "white" women "dismisses a crazy-interesting facet of history".

"While I'm not disputing the decidedly Euro-centric representation of features, I do take a little issue with dismissing all of these women as "white" - a lot of them are of mixed-race, and are of a time when intermarrying of wildly disparate family backgrounds for political alliance was the norm," said the reader. "Yes, their features were often anglicized in their portraits, but they weren't simply "white women".

Regardless of Art Frido's intention, the resulting video is worth a watch.
