Emma Watson has condemned the lack of empathy shown by social media users following the recent leak of celebrity nude photos.

Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton and a handful of Victoria's Secret models were embroiled in this week's hacking, which saw their personal photos distributed across the internet.

"Even worse than seeing women's privacy violated on social media is reading the accompanying comments that show such a lack of empathy," Watson said via her Twitter account.

The 24-year old UN Goodwill Ambassador, who is close friends with Jennifer Lawrence, is an advocate for women's rights and gender equality.

She joins Girls creator Lena Dunham in condemning the actions of the hackers, who wrote yesterday, "Seriously, do not forget that the person who stole these pictures and leaked them is not a hacker: they're a sex offender."

Unfortunately, a handful of other celebrities haven't been so kind: Ricky Gervais was inundated with complaints after he wrote on Twitter, "Celebrities, make it harder for people to get nude pics of you from your computer by not putting nude pics of yourself on your computer."

In response, Dunham said, "The 'don't take naked pics if you don't want them online' argument is the 'she was wearing a short skirt' of the web. Ugh."

Several celebrities involved in the nude photo hacking scandal have since consulted their legal teams.

"This is obviously an outrageous violation of privacy," said Kate Upton's lawyers. "We intend to pursue anyone disseminating or duplicating these illegally obtained images to the fullest extent possible."
