Florist Saskia Havekes, owner of Sydney's Grandiflora, gives five tips on caring for your blooms.

  • Put a teaspoon of bleach into the water to prevent odours.
  • Empty a small bottle of sparkling water into a vase of water to keep it clear.
  • Cut the tips of stems at an angle; it helps them absorb water and keeps them fresher for longer.
  • Recut stems and change the water every second day, especially for roses.
  • Dip the stems of hydrangeas, dahlias and cut phalaenopsis in hot water for three seconds, then plunge them into cold water for extra longevity.
