Presenting his new range in the Opera House, against the sublime backdrop of Sydney Harbour, Lee delivered a collection that reflected the effortless brilliance of its surroundings.

Working with shades of pale lilac, crisp powder-blue, black and white, the 24-year-old designer built on his reputation as a master of precise tailoring, while at the same time pushing in a new, softer direction.

Highlights included model Emma Norris's ink-blot print mini skirt and the icy mini dress worn by Julia Nobis embellished with knotted reams of pleated fabric which formed rigid lines over the body one moment, only to kick out into a flirty skirt the next.

"The idea was to mix the soft elements in with the tailoring," Lee explained backstage. "It was kind of this attraction to something softer and more unexpected."

Complicated? Yes. But the overall effect was dazzlingly clear.

Rosemount Australia Fashion Week 2010 was on May 3 - 7 in Sydney.
