Rei Kawakubo of Commes des Garçons, Yohji Yamamoto, Issey Miyake… These are the biggest names in Japanese fashion design, and you’ll find them all at the ‘Future Beauty: 30 years of Japanese Fashion’ exhibition at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA).
This exciting exhibition gives Australians the opportunity to see the true innovators of Japanese style, featuring more than 100 garments by iconic designers as well as younger radicals such as Jun Takahashi of Undercover, who are inspired by the dynamic street life of Tokyo.

Embodying a hybrid of tradition and techno-couture, the designs reflect an array of influences from punk to classic Japanese aesthetics. Divided across four themes, Tarun Nagesh, Associate Curator of Asian Art at GOMA, said the exhibition highlighted the immense impact of Japanese culture on world fashion, revolutionising the way we think about fashion today.
The exhibition opens tomorrow and runs till February 15 2015. It is accompanied by Australia’s first Commes des Garçons store, exclusive to GOMA, stocking the iconic Play line.
