Kate Upton "Upset" With Victoria’s Secret

When a two-year old image of Kate Upton on the back cover of a Victoria’s Secret catalogue surfaced yesterday, it was as much a surprise to the model herself as the rest of the fashion industry.

After all, not only did the company’s head model booker, Sophia Neophitou, call her “too obvious” to model for the brand, she also hinted Upton would never be allowed on the Victoria’s Secret runway.

“She’s like a page three girl," said Neophitou last year. "She’s like a footballer’s wife, with the too-blond hair and the kind of face that anyone with enough money can go out and buy."

Reports surfaced overnight that Upton was “furious” with Victoria’s Secret for using her image following the harsh comments, but a rep for the model has since tried to downplay the situation, saying she was simply “not thrilled about it”.

“She’s not contracted to work with Victoria’s Secret,” said the spokesperson. “The way it unraveled so quickly left a bad taste in her mouth.”

According to WWD.com, it’s unclear if Victoria’s Secret owns the rights to the images of Upton shot in 2011.

“It’s common practice for a company to do a “buyout” of images that give a brand unlimited use,” explained WWD.

The image at the centre of the controversy shows Upton dressed in a black bra with her hair falling across her face. It was reportedly shot for the brand in 2011, fueling rumours that Victoria’s Secret may be rethinking its stance on the model by running her image two years after the picture was first shot.

But, says her rep, as of right now, the rumours are untrue.

“She has no plans to be a Victoria’s Secret Angel. As far as I know, there are no discussions."
