MBFWA 2013 Designer Interview: Shakuhachi

What’s the inspiration behind your spring/summer collection?

Inspired by 1960’s silhouettes, nostalgic, floaty florals and space-age couture! The collection is a fun interplay of ‘the modern’ meets ‘the retro;’ it’s a real juxtaposition of contrasting prints and textiles.

What sort of prints and textures are featured in your upcoming range?
It’s luminescent! Lots of shiny, sheeny fabrics, metallic pastels, patent PU fabrications, bonded floral neoprene, bonded lace… lots of treats.

In your opinion, what are some of the big trends we can expect to see on the catwalk at MBFW?
Metallic’s, dreamy floral prints, pastel and gelato shades, hi-shine patent fabrics, exaggerated proportions, structured frills. . . and what do you know, it’s everything in our range (of course!!) ;-).

What’s your favourite fashion week memory?
When I first ever started (over a decade ago!) had a fashion week stand with little hand-made collection and a Japanese buyer came along and ordered $60,000 for our very first order of the day!! It was exciting and overwhelming all at the same time. Needless to say we drank champagne for the rest of the day.

What are you most looking forward to at fashion week this year?
The new venue at Carriageworks is exciting! Not to mention, every year fashion week is a real melting pot of innovation from established and emerging Australian talent. That’s always really fun to see!

What will you be doing after fashion week wraps?
Putting my feet up and having my baby!
