MBFWA 2013 Designer Interview: Michael Lo Sordo

What’s the inspiration behind your spring/summer collection?
This season we have taken inspiration from the idea of new volume, new age materials and manipulations. What seems simple but on closer inspection is actually intricate work is being applied. We’re also taking shapes from traditional nun dresses mixed with classic but modern tailoring and a strong essence of cut and drape.

What sort of prints and textures are featured in your upcoming range?
Our fabrics and texture developments are new. We’re working with contrast, especially between fabrics, so, soft and smooth bonded with hard and textured. We’re also combining unlikely fabrics and colour. I really wanted to take the concept to another place than previous seasons.

In your opinion, what are some of the big trends we can expect to see on the catwalk at MBFWA?
I believe Australian labels are really putting emphasising on who they are as brands and what makes them stand out. I’m really looking forward to seeing the innovators show as supporting emerging design is so important and there’s always great talent. In the studio we are taking a more classic approach to tailoring and traditional silhouettes injecting modern finishing and techniques.

What’s your favourite fashion week memory?
When I was a student I was interning at Spin for the week of Fashion Week at least 10 years ago and all I can remember is how much I was dying to see the Peter Morrissey show. The sex, the glam and all the hype and excitement didn't disappoint and I was obsessed. They just don't do shows like that much anymore....

What are you most looking forward to at fashion week this year?
I think it's wonderful and exciting that there are major buyers and media (both local and international) attending the event. To showcase my work to an audience like that and to gain exposure to a wider audience is an amazing deal for the growth and the future of my label, as well as the industry itself. I'm also excited to catch up and see my friends who are also showing, like Christopher Esber, the Ginger & Smart girls, From Britten and Kahlo. We can all share our triumphs and horror stories over a glass of wine or two afterward.

What will you be doing after fashion week wraps?
I’ll be at the Hyatt escaping the world and if anyone wishes to call me – please don't!!!!
